xHamster says women spend twice as much as men on porn

Freemium video site xHamster has released results of its latest survey into porn spending habits, revealing that of its paying customers, women spend more than twice as much as men.

A voluntary survey of 100,000 visitors to the Cyprus-based site found that, although men far outweigh women in terms of overall traffic, it’s women who lead the charge when it comes to purchasing premium content.

The figures show that on average, male visitors who paid, were likely to do so to the tune of an average of just $65 per year. Females, on the other hand, spent an average of $129 per year.

The survey also shows that female visitors, which make up less than a third of xHamster’s traffic, are younger, less likely to be gender binary and less likely to be straight than their male counterparts.

Two-thirds of women visiting were under 34 years-old, with fewer than 50 percent identifying as heterosexual. 30 percent said they were ‘bisexual’ and 7 percent as lesbian.

That diversity might explain why women are slightly more likely to have a positive perception of porn use – 77.52 percent versus 77.13 percent of men. Women are also more likely to have a negative perception too – 6.41 percent versus 5.21 percent.

Women are more likely to be in a relationship too, 72 per cent in fact, compared with just 62 per cent of men. In fact, 14 percent of female respondents said they were having sex at least once-per-day, compared to just 8 percent of men.

Although women, generally, are less likely to watch porn every day, the figure for amount of porn watched shoots up (for both sexes) where they see themselves as the dominant partner in their relationship. Submissives seem to watch less porn altogether, though that could just mean they’re watching what their dominant partner chooses.

The size of this survey is significant and again raises the question of whether women are being properly served by the porn industry, although there are female-focused and female-founded sites. Among them are VR sites like VirtualRealPassion and YanksVR (which also has a non-VR offering too), to name-check just a couple. Nonetheless, this research might suggest there’s still a sizeable gap in the market for more female-focused premium porn sites.
