Sony has announced it’s releasing a next-generation VR headset for the PlayStation 5, but not until sometime in 2022.
The first Playstation VR headset launched in October 2016, so you’d be forgiven for thinking that Sony had totally forgotten about VR since that time. But on Tuesday, February 23, Sony’s senior vice president in platform planning and management, Hideaki Nishino, wrote in a press statement that “Our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever, ” before revealing scant details of the PlayStation VR2 (presumably, PSVR2).
Nishino says the new headset will provide “a greater sense of presence”, with enhanced resolution, simpler set-up and a new VR controller. However, he adds that a lot of development is still underway.
Since 2016, Sony has sold five million of its PSVR headsets to customers, proving there’s demand for the tech out there. But now, experts recommend buyers hold off until the new version is released, as the original hardware is now quite dated.
So what does that mean for adult content on PS5? Well, unfortunately – as restricting adult content makes shareholders happy – Sony doesn’t have a particularly great track record when it comes to hosting adult content. Playstation 5 games don’t allow sexually explicit – or even sexually suggestive content – within games.
In 2019, a Sony spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal: “We don’t have criteria in written guidelines or that sort of thing because the policy was introduced kind of suddenly in the wake of the #MeToo movement.
“Sony is concerned the company could become a target of legal and social action.”
However, Sony users wanting to view adult content in VR can get around this by downloading WatchVR – a free Playstation app that allows you to stream VR content without downloading.
Sony claims its new VR system will come with “dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity”. But while this might be good news for the VR market as a whole, it doesn’t open many more avenues for adult content in virtual reality, when it does eventually arrive.
