National Ugly Mugs runs a tech-enabled safety network that helps sex workers report and receive alerts about dangerous clients. The organization operates what’s essentially a secure information-sharing platform where sex workers can flag violent or threatening individuals—what the industry calls “ugly mugs”—and get real-time warnings when others in the community face similar risks. As
we covered when it launched their mobile app, the system lets workers report incidents confidentially and check potential clients against a database of known threats.
The platform connects to a network of partner organizations across the UK and internationally, creating what’s become one of the most comprehensive safety databases for sex workers. Members can access alerts via web or mobile app, submit incident reports, and receive verified warnings about dangerous individuals. The service is free and designed with privacy and anonymity as core features—workers don’t need to share personal details to participate.
Since launching in 2012, NUM has expanded from its UK base to work with organizations in multiple countries, helping build similar safety networks globally. The organization operates as a registered charity and works closely with police forces and support services to address violence against sex workers while respecting the autonomy and privacy of the community it serves.
