Planet Theta developed what’s
billed as the world’s first VR dating app, creating virtual spaces where people can meet, connect, and date in a metaverse environment. Founded by Aurora Townsend in 2022, the platform uses VR and AI to facilitate real connections and social interactions—with a particular focus on safety, especially for women, informed by feedback from female beta testers.
The app supports popular VR headsets like Quest 2 and PCVR via Steam, and features customizable private high-rise apartments where users can hang out. Originally slated for a March 2022 launch, Planet Theta pushed its release to Fall 2024 to get things right. The platform has partnered with RiteStream for film screenings in the metaverse, adding social activities beyond just dating. It’s essentially bringing the dating app experience into VR, where users can interact as avatars in immersive 3D spaces rather than just swiping through photos on a screen.
