Tumblr, while not ostensibly and overtly a place aimed at porn, still gets its fair share due to its largely hands-off content policies. However, to be distributed via Google Play or Apple’s App Store, it has to jump through various hoops to keep within the content guideline rules, which, in short, don’t allow ‘adult’ or porn-related apps.
This has meant that despite Tumblr being a place for porn, and its users going there for porn, there wasn’t an easy way to deliver a solid user experience – everything had to be hidden away to keep within store guidelines. Now, however, a small update to the app brings a little switch to the settings menu on the iOS app that lets users opt-in to viewing adult content.
How did it get around the store App Store guidelines? It has NSFW content switched off by default, meaning you have to opt-in. To do so, just head to Settings on your phone > Tumblr > Safe Search and switch it off. Toggle it again to switch it back on, obviously.
What it means for Tumblr’s desktop platform remains to be seen – a huge amount of its desktop traffic is for adult content. With a better mobile app that allows easier access to that content, presumably that traffic will decline fairly significantly.
