AI image and video generators: why there’s no ranking here

The tools work; that is not in question. What is missing is any way to rank them honestly. Start with what the market actually is: research covered by Wired in 2025 tracked 85 “nudify” sites drawing around 18.5 million visitors a month and earning up to $36 million a year, and the Tech Transparency Project found over a hundred undressing apps distributed through Apple and Google’s own stores, with more than 705 million lifetime downloads between them. There are legitimate tools somewhere in that mix, but the documented traffic and money sit with the part built around real people’s photos, and any recommendation has to live with that context.

Underneath that sits an unanswered provenance problem. Most NSFW image generation runs on model lineages whose training data was scraped without anyone’s consent, and the foundational dataset behind them was found by the Stanford Internet Observatory in December 2023 to contain over a thousand verified child sexual abuse images; it was withdrawn and only re-released in cleaned form eight months later. No AI porn generator we could find publishes its training-data provenance, offers deletion you can verify, or has passed any independent audit. The EU now legally requires model providers to publish a training-content summary; we could not find a single adult generator complying. That gap tracks with what we found when we examined the wider law: the AI Act’s treatment of adult content is light enough that enforcement against generators was never going to be quick.

We know how this category got here firsthand, because this page used to be our ranked generator list. • Deletion you can verify, rather than a marketing line above a server nobody audits
• An independent audit of any of the above

The nearest thing to consent in this market today operates at the likeness layer, not the training layer: a handful of platforms now license named creators’ likenesses under contract, with revenue share and contractual deletion. That is real progress, but it still says nothing about what trained the underlying models. When a tool clears the list above, this page will change, the same way it has changed before.

OpenAI announced a ChatGPT adult mode in October 2025 with a December target, missed it, missed the retargeted window, and in March 2026 paused the whole thing indefinitely, with no timeline; the only piece that shipped was age prediction. The pattern holds: the mainstream keeps deciding this category is too hot to touch, and the specialists keep it.

Deepfakes: where the law now stands

Sexual imagery of a real, identifiable person who hasn’t consented isn’t a porn genre; legally, it is image-based abuse. There is no recommendation to make, so the useful thing this page can give you is the current legal picture, because it changed decisively this year.
