Wands have been around since the 1960s, having undergone various iterations, but ultimately offering the same strong-handled, bulb-headed device, designed for deep-tissue vulva stimulation — though all genitals and erogenous zones can benefit from its deep vibes.
It’s been several years since We-Vibe, a company that initially rose to fame for making wearable clitoral vibrators, launched its first wand vibrator. We reviewed the We-Vibe Wand at the time and, despite a few small issues, it was a generally excellent product.
So when We-Vibe announced it was releasing a new edition of this toy, we were keen to check out the updates. Enter the aptly named We-Vibe Wand 2.
We-Vibe Wand 2: Design & technology
Like its predecessor, the We-Vibe Wand 2 is a cordless, rechargeable wand vibrator. Made of body-safe silicone in We-Vibe’s signature shade of purple, it measures 11″ in length and the widest part of the head measures around 2.1″ in diameter. Its handle is curved and its neck is flexible.
The We-Vibe Wand 2 is IPX7 waterproof, meaning it is fully submersible. So if you’re looking for a wand vibrator you can use in the bath, this is it. It is also USB rechargeable via the included cable, with a 2.5-hour charging time offering around two hours of runtime depending on which settings you use.
The We-Vibe Wand 2’s additional features include app compatibility, a travel lock so that it won’t accidentally turn on in your luggage, and a Smart Silence feature.
Smart Silence is an innovative feature created by WOW Tech, We-Vibe’s parent company, and is now used in many of its products. When this setting is enabled, the toy will vibrate when it is in direct contact with the body and shut off automatically when it is not. And yes, it knows the difference between a body part and a bed/pillow/desk. Don’t ask me how (magic? More likely just really good sensors.)
Smart Silence is a game-changer if you need discretion or like to be able to stop and start playing seamlessly. Smart Silence is enabled by default, but you can switch it off if it’s not for you.
Unlike the original We-Vibe Wand, the Wand 2 does not have any attachments included. This is slightly disappointing because they were such a fabulous addition to the original product. However, if you have the previous iteration, the attachments will work with this one too.
Many other wand attachments will also work with this toy–they’re not quite a perfect fit, but I’ve found that my Godemiche wand toppers work perfectly well with it, for example.
The We-Vibe Wand 2 is intended as a clitoral vibrator but can just as easily be enjoyed by people with penises.
We-Vibe Wand 2: Performance In-Use
I could almost conclude the review here and simply say that I think the We-Vibe Wand 2 is an excellent vibrator — because it genuinely is.
When it comes to wand vibrators, I’m generally rather brand-loyal to Doxy. So for another product to give my long-time fave a serious run for its money? Well, I can’t overstate how impressive that is.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again: the main thing I want from a vibrator is a motor that delivers powerful, deep, rumbly vibrations. On that score, the We-Vibe Wand 2 delivers and then some.
It is one of the rumbliest vibrators I have ever used, in eight years of collecting sex toys and reviewing them for a living. Even more impressively, and unlike many vibrators, the rumble doesn’t turn to an annoying buzz when you turn the toy up to the highest setting.
Don’t want to pick between rumbliness and intensity? You no longer have to.
I also adore the shape of this wand’s head. Instead of the usual curved-all-around wand head, it has broad and rounded sides as well as ridges that We-Vibe calls “pleasure edges.” This means that, whether you’re in the mood for focused or broader stimulation or a mixture, you can just position the toy as desired or switch between them easily.
Speaking of positioning, I also have to shout out the We-Vibe Wand 2’s flexible neck. This makes it easy to position the head in exactly the way that works for your body.
Though I wouldn’t go as far as to call it quiet (and certainly not “whisper quiet”,) the We-Vibe Wand 2’s noise level is fine. It’s noticeable, but it’s not likely to disturb your roommates or wake the neighbours unless your walls are made of paper.
A couple of small things to be aware of: due to its size, this toy is rather heavy. It also transmits quite a lot of vibrations through the handle. These things don’t particularly bother me, especially when considered alongside all of this toy’s benefits, but it’s something to be aware of if you struggle to hold heavy things or suffer from hand pain or discomfort.
This is an absolutely amazing toy.
We-Vibe Wand 2: User Experience, Interface and App Functionality
The We-Vibe Wand 2’s manual controls allow you to scroll through the 10 vibration patterns and 10 intensity levels in both directions and to set them in any combination. The buttons are easy to press and the interface is intuitive and simple to use. This is a huge improvement on the problematic user interface of We-Vibe’s original Wand.
If you don’t want to or can’t use a smartphone app, you can absolutely enjoy the We-Vibe Wand 2 without it. However, the app (now simply called We-Vibe App, formerly We-Connect) allows you to enjoy additional functionalities as well as hand over control to a partner.
Something that caught me out: my device wouldn’t pick up the Wand 2 at first because I was running an older version of the We-Vibe app that I downloaded a few months ago to test a different toy. If the same happens to you, just update the app or remove and re-download it to ensure you are running the latest version.
Once that was sorted, the connection was fast and straightforward. The connectivity was generally good, as long as I stayed in a part of my house with a good internet connection, and the response time was near-immediate.
The We-Vibe app allows you to enjoy your toy in various ways. You can control it from your phone rather than using the manual controls, create and save “playlists” of your favourite settings or patterns in any order you choose, or use Beat Mode to vibe along with music (this does not work with streaming apps, the content needs to be downloaded and stored on your device.
There were two app features I found fairly useless:
- Ambient Mode allows you, in theory, to vibe along with ambient noise in your environment. However, the noise has to be very loud for this to work. I suspect this feature was developed with We-Vibe’s small, wearable toys in mind, allowing users to wear them in loud environments such as nightclubs and parties. For a wand, though, it’s useless unless you happen to enjoy blasting extremely loud music while you masturbate. (And if so, no judgement, you do you!)
- Touch Mode is something I’ve complained about in my previous We-Vibe reviews. The idea is that the vibrations turn on and then change intensity in response to how you touch the screen. I can get them to switch on but whatever I do, I cannot get them to change intensity at all.
To hand over control to your partner, they will also need to download the We-Vibe app and have a stable internet connection. Once you’re connected, they will be able to control your toy from their phone from anywhere in the world.
We-Vibe Wand 2: The Verdict
This is an absolutely amazing toy.
The We-Vibe Wand 2 has improved upon the original design of what was already an excellent product in almost every way. From perhaps one of the best motors I’ve ever come across to that amazing head design, good manual controls, and top notch app responsiveness across most features, I can hardly believe just how good this toy is across the board.
The We-Vibe Wand 2 retails at $169 in the USA and £149.00 in the UK. Not a cheap toy, but amazing value for the quality you’ll be getting.
