Why?

The Museum of Sex, which opened in New York in 2002, is set to open a second venue in Miami in spring 2023, featuring exhibitions showing historical sextech products and a ‘sexy robot’ art exhibition.

The museum is set to take over a 32,000 square foot space in Miami’s Allapattah district, with design firm Snøhetta in charge of design concepts. It will feature galleries, retail areas and a bar as well as many interactive exhibitions.

Sextech past and present is expected to be a strong focus of the museum, with an exhibition called Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency set to be among the first attractions unveiled. It will feature over 500 sex-rated objects, dating back from the 1920s to present day.

Sex robots, or at least sexy robots, are expected to make an appearance from the off too. Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama’s exhibition Hajime Sorayama: Desire Machines, will be on show at the museum’s opening. It will feature four robot sculptures and 20 paintings that have not been publicly exhibited before.

In the 1990s, Sorayama created erotic cyborg figures which he dubbed ‘Sexy Robots’. One of Sorayama’s sexy robot images was used by Boston rockers Aerosmith for the cover art of their 2001 album Just Press Play (below, via Wikipedia).

The Super Funland: Journey Into the Erotic Carnival interactive exhibition, featuring a 4D ‘Tunnel of Love’ ride, is also set to feature at the Miami museum on launch.

“Our inaugural programming perfectly embodies our ambitions to be a thought-provoking forum around sex and sexuality, and to bring forth a unique, publicly loved and critically acclaimed cultural offering to Miami,” Daniel Gluck, The Museum of Sex’s executive director and founder, said in a statement.
