It’s not that often that you’ll find the publishing arm of a business reporting much negative about its own parent company, but Into took that unusual step earlier this week in reporting that Scott Chen, Grindr’s former CTO and now President, personally believed that marriage was between a man and a woman.
The comments, made on Facebook, were translated by Into:
“There are people who believe that marriage is a holy matrimony between a man and a woman. I agree but that’s none of our business. There are also people who believe that the purpose of marriage is to create children that carry their DNA. That’s also none of our business. There are people that are simply different from you, who desperately want to get married. They have their own reasons.”
Unsurprisingly, considering Chen is the President of a company that describes itself as the “largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people,” a barrage of criticism followed, causing Chen to swiftly clarify his statements in a follow-up post.
In this he said that he “[is] huge advocate for LGBTQ+ rights since I was young. I support gay marriage and I am proud that I can work for Grindr.”
Zach Stafford, editor of Into and Grindr’s chief content officer, told the Guardian that the publication had taken the unusual step of reporting directly against its parent company’s interests because the comments didn’t accurately reflect Grindrs values.
“Grindr’s goal as a company is to help seek the full equity of all LGBT people’s rights around the world, especially when it comes to dating and love. And marriage for many is an end goal to our app,” Stafford told the Guardian.
