Why?

Apple and Meta have recently unveiled their new mixed reality headsets, marking a significant milestone in the VR and augmented reality (AR) sectors. This development is not only expected to revolutionize the tech industry but also holds the potential to significantly influence our personal lives, including our sexual relationships.

Apple’s first headset, the Vision Pro, is set to be released in early 2024. Priced at a premium $3,499, the Vision Pro is equipped with dual 4k resolution displays and is controlled using eyes, hands, and voice, eliminating the need for controllers. This headset, with its 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, charges on a small external battery pack, offering up to two hours of operation on a full charge.

One unique feature of the Vision Pro is the visibility of the wearer’s eyes from outside the headset, a departure from the norm in mixed reality headsets. Will this potentially make wearers self-conscious, when using the headset around others, perhaps not allowing them to feel fully immersed in their mixed-reality world? Maybe – either way, it looks a little weird, or at least will take getting used to, and could be a factor with implications in intimate settings

The Vision Pro is powered by an M2 chip and R1 chipset, similar to Apple’s 2022 iPad Pro and its higher-end computers and laptops. It is designed to easily synch with Apple computers and laptops via Bluetooth, providing an immersive display of your computer screen and any content running on it.

Meta’s Quest 3 mixed-reality headset, announced a few days before Apple’s reveal, is a more affordable option at $499. It comes with two controllers and is 40 percent slimmer than its predecessor. The Quest 3’s passthrough capabilities were recently praised by Bloomberg tech journalist Mark Gurman as being “almost lifelike”.

The potential influence of this device on our sexual lives is an intriguing aspect to consider. As this headset becomes more mainstream, it could open up new avenues for intimacy and connection. For instance, long-distance couples could use VR to share virtual experiences or communicate in more immersive ways. Furthermore, this device could also provide educational opportunities, such as sexual health and consent education in a more engaging and interactive format.

However, it’s important to note that these potential benefits come with their own set of challenges. Issues of privacy, consent, and the potential for misuse of technology in intimate settings will need to be addressed as this technology evolves.

The release of these headsets could signal the beginning of a new retail war between Apple and Meta, especially if mixed-reality becomes more than a niche sector. As we stand on the brink of a new era in mixed reality technology, it’s clear that devices like Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3 are not just reshaping our technological landscape, but also poised to redefine our personal and intimate lives.

One potential way the Vision Pro could influence our sexual lives in the future is by allowing us to explore new forms of sexual experiences in virtual environments. With the help of this headset, users could create their own customized environments, characters, and scenarios, allowing them to experiment with different sexual identities and orientations in a safe and private setting. Additionally, users could use the headset to connect with others in virtual spaces, potentially revolutionizing the way we think about long-distance relationships and intimacy.

The potential for these headsets to enhance long-distance relationships, provide engaging sexual health education, and create new avenues for intimacy is also significant. However, it’s equally crucial that we navigate the challenges of privacy, consent, and potential misuse that come with this new territory.

As Apple and Meta lead the charge in this emerging field, the impact of mixed reality on our sexual lives is not just a possibility—it’s an imminent reality.
