Oculus Quest and Rift S now available to pre-order, delivery from mid-May

Following the reveal last October, Facebook-owned Oculus has launched its long-awaited new VR headsets – the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Rift S. Both are now available for pre-order on the Oculus Store, Amazon and other global retailers at $399, with an initial dispatch date set for May 21.

Both the Quest and the Rift S headsets come with 6 degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) Oculus Touch controllers. The Quest’s are wire free – giving you more freedom to manoeuvre – while the Rift S still requires a PC, and comes with USB 3.0 and DisplayPort cables, along with room scale tracking that needs a minimum of 6.5 by 6.5 feet, making it a little more restrictive.

Where the Rift S is limited to PC usage, the Oculus Quest is an all-in-one VR system, which is good news for exploring adult VR with no strings attached, all you need to set up is a compatible smartphone. However, if you want double the storage space (from 64GB to 128GB), which you may do if you want to download plenty of material, it’ll cost you an extra $100 – making it $499 in total.

Since Oculus has stopped manufacturing the original Rift ($349), the experience of the Rift S offers higher resolution and pixel density, however, with a lower refresh rate.

Owners of the original Rift need not worry though, as both devices will undergo the same regular updates and releases for the foreseeable future. You can check if the Rift S is compatible with your computer by downloading this compatibility tool. You’ll need at least 8GB of RAM, as well as some other key specs.

One key difference between the Quest and the Rift S (and the original Oculus Rift) is that the Quest doesn’t use the same app store – Oculus has confirmed that it will have 50 games ready to download on launch day.

Of course, if you don’t want to spend much time playing games on your VR headset, there’s not too many reasons to spend the extra cash and not just get the Oculus GO for watching VR porn instead. It’s the best option on the market right now still.
