Tumblr says that it won’t regulate porn videos and other adult content on its platform for users within South Korea, as had been requested by the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) last week, according to the Yonhap News Agency.
While there’s no question that Tumblr does indeed host porn, it told the KCSC that it was a US company with no presence in the country, and complied with US law. It’s a position that the Korean Commission doesn’t really appreciate, given the localization the company has done for the Korean market.
“Tumblr has been providing Korean-language service since 2013, although it does not hold a branch here. The company should give minimum respect to South Korean rules and cooperate [with local authorities],” Rep. Choi Myung-gil of the People’s Party told Yonhap.
The organization also noted that Tumblr now hosts more adult content than Twitter and Facebook. Indeed, earlier this year, Tumblr revamped its iOS app to make porn easier to find for iOS users.
