We need a better word for ‘teledildonics’

Going with the layman’s guide to understanding everything in an almost-accurate way (Wikipedia), the term Teledildonics means:

“Teledildonics (also known as “cyberdildonics”) is real or fictional technology for remote sex (or, at least, remote mutual masturbation), where tactile sensations are communicated over a data link between the participants.”

Part of the problem isn’t the fuzzy meaning, it’s simply the word. Or more specifically, the crude amalgam of two very literal words. The topic isn’t new, but search on Google and somewhere near the top of the list you’ll find articles explaining what the hell this stupid word means.

And the problem is that it’s not any relation to any feelings related to sex, or at least it’s not for me. And as a result it comes across as a buzzword that’s easy to gloss over, which could ultimately mean it misssing out on reaching ‘mainstream’ audiences. It’s descriptive of the technology, sure, but when was the last time you saw the words ‘the Internet of Things’ or the acronym IoT/IOT and were filled with excitement. Never. That’s when.

Did you miss these?

What’s the answer? I don’t have it. Perhaps you do.

I’d suggest something that conveys what the technology can do, the way in which it can transform a long-distance relationship, or transport anyone alone to a virtual world of escapism; the potential really is amazing for huge swathes of society.

I’m not sure exactly what that word would be, but I’d say it probably isn’t ‘teledildonics’. It’s a tough challenge for any company in the industry, but it’s one that needs addressing.

In the meantime, feel free to leave your own suggestions below.
