Over the last few of years, noises in the sextech industry have been made about audio porn potentially being a ‘next big thing’.
Apps such as Emjoy, Ferly and Quinn offer erotic audio stories and are largely marketed at women. The marketing strategy is based on the idea that women tend to be more turned on by what they hear than men, who tend to be more into visuals when it comes to sex and porn.
These apps have largely remained niche prospects, although newly-announced figures from Quinn have suggested that audio porn may be gaining more traction than many in the industry realised.
Quinn CEO Caroline Spiegel told The Information (paywall) that the app recently passed the 300,000 subscriber mark. With access to Quinn costing from $2.99 per month, that amounts to a healthy user base and income for the previously-free app, which launched in 2019.
Quinn features ten-minute erotic stories uploaded by creators, in the similar way that a creator might upload an erotic photo or video to a site like OnlyFans. The uploaded stories are then curated by Quinn’s staff.
“It’s not watered down. It’s not what people think women want. It’s made directly in response to what women want — and that is something new,” says Spiegel.
Alongside the 300,000+ subscriber figure, it was reported that some Quinn creators earn up to $5,000 per month by producing stories that gain large amounts of plays among users. This kind of income would be considered pretty healthy for most full-time adult content creators using sites such as OnlyFans.
In an adult creator content environment considered increasingly unstable due to toughening content rules and porn crackdowns, it seems like audio porn could finally be a viable new revenue stream for creators, to go alongside their visual output.
The creator-led model also helps Quinn bypass audio library size problems. Some audio porn apps commission and create their own content, meaning that it’s a constant challenge to keep offering new stories and a large library that users won’t quickly exhaust.
With creators doing the hard work of story-making, then Quinn staff curating the submissions, topping up the library is more straightforward. As on some other platforms, Quinn creators gain loyal followers eager to check out their latest output.
It might be a while before Quinn is sweeping away the likes of Pornhub, but the stats suggest that the buzz around audio porn is getting louder.
