Twitter has launched its new Subscriptions function to all users, allowing you to paywall certain tweets and Twitter content. For adult content creators, this could also potentially open up a new revenue stream.
Unlike many mainstream social media sites, Twitter allows porn and other legal sexually explicit content on its platform. However, without any kind of paywall function being available previously, porn content creators have tended to use Twitter to promote their paid-for content on other platforms, such as OnlyFans and its many rivals.
The new function allows direct Twitter monetization of content, with users now able to set a charge to access subscriber-only tweets, that could contain explicit photos or videos. They are also able to set up ‘conversation spaces’ that are only accessible to subscribers.
Twitter says that it will not take a cut of Subscriptions earnings initially, although a percentage will be taken to cover fees incurred by app and payment services. For example, Subscriptions users will receive 70 percent of payments made through the Twitter app on iOS (Apple devices) and Android devices, as the respective app stores each take a 30 percent cut of payments made through them.
In November 2022 Twitter CEO Musk announced that the platform would allow monetization of “all forms of content”.
Earlier in 2022, before Musk’s takeover, Twitter scrapped the development of an OnlyFans-style porn subscription function, over fears about content potentially related to child exploitation.
