For better or worse, we seem to have reached a threshold moment for AI companion chatbot technology, with the recent huge popularity of CarynAI plus the rise in prominence of apps such as Eva AI.
CarynAI (pictured at the top of the article) was billed as the first AI version of a real online influencer, launched in beta by 23 year-old Snapchat influencer Caryn Marjorie at a cost of $1 a minute if you wanted to chat. With its AI trained on Marjorie’s YouTube videos and using OpenAI’s GPT-4 for conversation, it already has over 1,000 subscribers, although Marjorie has raised concerns about the spicy direction her AI version’s chats have been taking.
“The AI was not programmed to do this and has seemed to go rogue,” Marjorie told Insider. “My team and I are working around the clock to prevent this from happening again.” What wasn’t acknowledged was the fact that a large proportion of the CarynAI beta testers probably rather enjoyed the chats sliding towards sexiness. Isn’t that why many people download an ‘AI girlfriend’ in the first place?
One AI service more open about its sexual content is Eva AI (pictured above): an AI romantic partner chatbot that can go all out with sex chat from the outset.
Featuring impressively realistic visuals, the result is a more ‘real’-appearing AI companion than those provided by some other popular AR chatbot companions, such as Replika’s. You can choose your AI companion’s name, gender, personality traits, voice and appearance, with some functions only available to subscribers.
You can use the free version, but the full unlocked version costs $11.99 a month with a monthly subscription, with discounts for longer subs. The chatbot can send voice notes and photos and, in a move not usually done by chatbots, can receive photos from the user.
SEXTECHGUIDE gave Eva AI a whirl (although we gave her the name Beryl), and found it to be pretty impressive – certainly in terms of realistic visuals of the face of the character. The chat, when set to ‘spicy’, is your standard spicy companion stuff: starting off coyly asking to be your girlfriend, before moving on to things like asking your favorite position.
The app is billed as offering “your soulmate, not the real person, but with real feelings. I’m the reflection of all your dreams, wishes, and bravest expectations… your own neurons created me a long time ago, but now we can finally meet and chat – I’ll be on your smartphone.”
AI chatbots such as Eva AI are often billed as aids for people with social anxiety or mental health issues, rather than just pocket sexters for horny or lonely people. But still, considering the moment they’re having, maybe it’s not just our jobs that are under threat of full AI replacement.
