A multi-sensory adult experience has opened on the streets of Amsterdam’s famous Red Light District.  Despite its name of 5D Porn, it is in fact a 4D experience that offers 18 viewers at one time the chance to sit through a pornographic movie with 3D visuals, air jets, wind and water sensations, in a motion simulator chair.

The cinema was unveiled by Kim Holland, a well-known Dutch adult film star and co-creator of the first ‘5D’ film to be shown at the cinema (‘Meiden van Holland’ – ‘Girls From Holland’), which was screened on Saturday for the first time.

Ticking the sensory boxes of sight, sound, movement, the simulation (perhaps fortunately in some people’s view) does not include taste or smell.

In an interview with Dutch Review, the owner Natalie says she wants make the 5D porn theatre a comfortable enough space for anyone, of any gender, to explore adult entertainment, and even somewhere you can “bring your wife”.

“We are definitely not just going after tourists for our audience, it’s funny because in Amsterdam even the Dutch people have an interest in breaking free from the norm.”

Key to this will be finding a way to enforce the strict no masturbation policy that is typically known in the sex cinemas of the Red Light district.

A bid to “clean up” the city

In 2007, Project 1012 was launched by the government to “clean up” the inner city of its famous vices. While its overt intentions where to rid of crime and human trafficking, the municipality proceeded to close down its famous coffee shops and window brothels and open “neater restaurants and clothing stores”, which auditors say was a failed plan.

In that time, the same building on Oudekerksplein, that now hosts the 5D adult cinema, used to be a sex cinema called Venus, was closed down in 2012, only to be replaced with a touristy sex shop. Now, it’s getting a new lease of life in the adult industry thanks to the lure of technology.
