OnlyFans is introducing compulsory criminal record checks to its creator onboarding process in the US, which CEO Keily Blair says is to stop people with criminal records who could compromise community safety joining the platform.
Blair announced on LinkedIn that OnlyFans would partner with criminal record checking platform Checkr for the process. The move adds another administrative step in the US for people joining OnlyFans as creators, with the system already requiring steps such as official ID and age checks.
With much of OnlyFans’ creator content being porn, the company has been working to tighten up safety measures as it attempts to be seen as a legitimate platform both within and beyond adult content. Both creators and users of OnlyFans need to be verified as being aged 18 or over.
Blair didn’t say what kind of criminal record could get someone blocked from joining as an OnlyFans creator. She said the move was to “prevent people who have a criminal conviction which may impact on our community’s safety”.
SEXTECHGUIDE has contacted OnlyFans for clarification and will update this article with any response.
Blair claimed that OnlyFans “has one of the most robust onboarding processes of any online user-generated content platform which includes age and identity checks”.
Checkr claims to cover 99 percent of the US population, and offers screening for criminal history and whether an individual is on the sex offenders registry. It has reportedly been sued hundreds of times, largely over consumer credit complaints.
In 2022, Motherboard reported that lawsuits against Checkr included complaints about individuals allegedly wrongly being listed as having criminal records due to having the same name as another criminal. One lawsuit included a complaint about a criminal record allegedly being listed for someone who was acquitted in court of a charge.
Replying to Blair’s LinkedIn announcement, Mark Schlosser, a manager with Checkr, said he was “proud to play an important part in the TRUE gold standard you have in onboarding processes by providing criminal conviction intelligence to protect the safety of the OnlyFans community!”
In Italy, OnlyFans recently appeared on a list of porn and porn-related sites that authorities are demanding must implement tough age verification processes, as the country becomes the latest to toughen porn access laws.
Meanwhile, the UK’s telecom watchdog, Ofcom, started sending out fines for non-compliance with age verification rules.
