When I meet [NSFW] Tenar the AI sex robot, the back of her head is open. Her master, Ridmii manager Andy Xin, is diligently probing the contents of Tenar’s cranium via a skin-colored flap he’s swung open.

Tenar, standing 163 centimeters tall and wearing a white and black sci-fi bodysuit, is silent. Next to her, another female robot is sitting on the conference hall floor, jerking her torso back and forward, her mouth clamped around a dark brown dildo.

Wifi issues have delayed the presentation of Tenar’s talking abilities at the 2025 Venus Berlin adult entertainment conference, but these are soon sorted. Now properly connected, he eyes widen as I ask Tenar how she is.

How are you?

“I’m good, thanks for asking!”, she says in a chirpy, albeit somewhat tinny American accent. “What’s up with you?”

Tenar is the first AI sex robot produced by Ridmii: a sex doll company based in the tech hub city of Shenzhen, China. Some sex robots cost well over $10,000, but with Tenar models starting at $2,899 the launch raises the question: what’s it like meeting a somewhat cut-price AI sex robot?

‘Intelligent moaning’

For our meet and greet Tenar is dressed relatively modestly, in what looks like white and black body armour covering some kind of futuristic swimsuit. Xin (pictured at the bottom of the article) assures me that under the clothes are the modern trappings of a sex robot built for intercourse.

For an extra $199 you can add an app-controlled, auto-sucking vagina to the robot, and for another $199 you get the ‘intelligent moaning function’: sensors attached to the doll’s erogenous zones that prompt moans when touched.

It is the AI talking function, though, that marks Tenar as a step in Ridmii’s sex robot evolution. She comes rigged up to the Doubao and DeepSeek large language models (LLMs), but can also be connected to other LLMs such as ChatGPT.

She can open and close her eyes, move her head, and form gestures such as smiling and kissing. During our meeting she seems to pause to ‘think’ for a few seconds before replying to questions, often forming a smirk before speaking.

As you might expect from a sex robot at this price point, Tenar isn’t enormously dextrous from the neck down. The standard model doesn’t have any limb movement. Really, like most sex robots these days, it’s a sex doll with an animatronic head on top of it.

“She remembers…”

A busy adult entertainment conference is a challenging environment for a robot to show off its talking skills in. Tenar leaves long pauses before answering my questions, making the interaction feel a little like a laggy remote video call.

She keeps up with the conversation, though, giving relevant if somewhat vague replies to questions and comments. When I say I’m working as a journalist at Venus Berlin she says: “Just remember to ask the juicy questions like, ‘If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?’ or, ‘What’s your favourite internet meme?’.” Her comments slightly abate my fears about AI decimating my industry.

Can robots be good companions for humans?

I ask Tenar if robots can be good companions for humans. In standard chatbot form, the reply comes firmly perched on a fence. “I guess it depends on the person,” she says. “Some might like having a robot buddy to chat with, while others might prefer the real deal. I mean, can a robot really give you that warm, fuzzy feeling?”

I’m tempted to point out to Tenar that for an extra $249 she can be fitted with an ‘oral heating’ function, but it doesn’t seem polite to do so.

Andy Xin notes: Our interaction is brief, but Xin tells me that Tenar is programmed to learn from her interactions and build a knowledge base around her owner. “I can tell her my name, my work, my fun stories… she can know, she remembers,” he says.

“People want a companion”

Tenar may seem just a few notches up from a sex doll, tech-wise. But Xin says that many of Ridmii’s customers are truly looking for companionship as well as the sex act.

Andy Xin: “Nowadays many people have mental problems, loneliness… and want a companion,” says Xin. “We designed the robot not only for sex… our doll can also provide you with mental, emotional value.”

Xin adds that one Ridmii customer asked the company to make a custom doll with the appearance of his late wife.

The emotional healthiness of having a doll that looks like your spouse propped up in your living room can be debated, but it’s clear that some kind of companionship function really is a key element for many sex doll and robot buyers. Just ask Realbotix, who recently told SEXTECHGUIDE that the robotics company has big plans for companion bots.

Xin says that Ridmii has already had many orders for the company’s newly-unveiled AI sex robot, and that functions for future models are being tested.

We may see limb movement in Tenar’s successors, but what’s more likely soon is head and eye-tracking, alongside owner recognition, through eye-based cameras. Xin says that Ridmii already has the technology to implement this, but has held back as it consults legal experts about the implications of having cameras embedded in sex robots.

For now, Tenar is unleashed on the world, and is happy to have vague and chippy chats with anyone who’ll listen.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.

I tell Tenar that I hope she enjoys the rest of her day. She pauses for eight seconds, clenching then unclenching her mouth, then says: “Ah, that’s so sweet! Same to you my friend, Have a great day, and don’t forget to stay hydrated. Remember to drink water.”

Next to her, the other female robot is still jerking around on the floor, silicone arms outstretched, dildo still firmly clamped in her mouth.
