India has blocked a slew of porn sites including Pornhub, Brazzers and BangBros in the government’s latest round of website bans.
The country’s Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), in an order dated September 24, 2022, instigated the blocking of 67 websites including the aforementioned porn sites, in a move that will likely cut off many of the sites’ users in India, which has a population of 1.2 billion.
The latest additions to India’s list of blocked porn and adult content sites takes the total to 857. Other blocked sites include explicit hookup site Adult Friend Finder, celebrity nude image site Mr. Skin and porn camming platform Chaturbate.
The Indian Express published a full list of porn and adult content sites now banned in India.
The MeitY said the sites contained “obscene material” that “tarnish the image of modesty of women”. India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) told the country’s internet service providers (ISPs) to block the 67 new sites after judgements from a court in Pune plus India’s High Court.
Under a new 2021 Indian law, ISPs in the country need to block sites that show people “in full or partial nudity or shows or depicts such individual in any sexual act or conduct”.
The Indian Express reported that it was generally understood that despite this wording, the rules were designed to be used to crack down on revenge porn rather than more general, consensual porn.
