In these ongoing pandemic times, people are searching for different and creative ways to maintain sexual connection. It comes as no surprise, then, that app controlled and remote sex toys have boomed during this period, and the most recent is the Ohmibod for Kiiroo Lumen.

Kiiroo and OhMiBod are two long-standing giants in the sextech space so, when I learned that they’d collaborated on another new toy (following the OhMiBod Fuse, Esca, and Esca 2,) we simply had to get our hands on it.

But how did the Kiiroo and Ohmibod Lumen fare in our review process?

OhMiBod and Kiiroo Lumen: Design and Functionality

The Lumen is a Bluetooth-enabled and app-controllable butt plug adorned with a light-up blue LED in the base. It is fully waterproof, USB-rechargeable via the included magnetic cable, and comes with a black silky storage bag.

The Lumen’s shape is a traditional butt plug design, with a couple of creative twists. The tapered body of the plug is ribbed, which provides additional stimulation on insertion and as it sits inside the wearer. It offers 3-inches of insertable length and has a diameter of 1-inch at the widest point.

The base is elongated, which makes the plug more comfortable to wear for longer periods. The top side of the base features the OhMiBod and Kiiroo logos, and the underside is where the manual control button, magnetic charging point, and LED are located.

The LED is not just for decoration. It serves as a visual indicator of which setting the plug is on, increasing in brightness as power increases and flashing in time with the pulsing patterns.

The Lumen is coated in super soft and body-safe black silicone which is pleasantly squishy to the touch, particularly around the head of the plug.

The Lumen currently retails for $119 (correct at the time of publication and updating).

OhMiBod and Kiiroo Lumen: Insertion and Wearability

Even before testing the apps, I loved this plug straight away. Its aesthetic is stylish and sexy, and it is well-designed and well thought out.

Thanks to the squishy tip, tapered shape, and soft silicone, the plug is easy and comfortable to insert. Of course, you’ll need to use plenty of lube as with any kind of anal play. My personal pick is Sliquid Sassy, a gentle but long-lasting anal lube, but any good quality water-based lube will do the trick.

The slimline neck and well-positioned base means that the plug sits comfortably once it is inserted, meaning it should be comfortable enough for long-term wear if that’s something you’re into trying.

OhMiBod and Kiiroo Lumen: In Use

Manual play

In reality, I often don’t want to use an app with my sex toys (unless I’m doing something specific like playing with a long-distance partner or engaging in some discreet public play). Initial tests were done without the app functionality to see how it fared.

The Lumen features a single-button interface on the base of the toy. Once you’ve switched the toy on (a two second press-and-hold), the LED light will flash to indicate the toy is in Bluetooth mode. Press it again and it’ll switch into manual mode. You can then scroll through the three constant vibration speeds and two pulsing patterns at a touch of the button.

In an ideal world, I’d have liked to be able to scroll through patterns both ways. But since there are only five settings, I can’t complain too much. I actually want to credit the creators for only including two patterns in the basic, non-app settings. I don’t really care for patterns and anecdotally, neither do many sex toy users. So not having to scroll through five or ten of them was a blessing.

Power-wise, the Lumen delivers a pretty impressive buzz. The vibrations aren’t what I would describe as rumbly, but that doesn’t bother me with an anal toy the way it would with a clitoral toy. Speaking as someone with a vulva, the vibrations on the higher settings were powerful enough to provide some indirect clitoral and G-spot pleasure.

A full charge took about 90 minutes, and gave a solid hour of play out of the toy, without running it down to nothing.

Connected play

To use the Lumen to its fullest potential, you’ll need one of two apps: the OhMiBod app or the FeelConnect app by Kiiroo. Both are free and available on both iOS and Android. At the time of writing, the Lumen is not yet available on the OhMiBod app (as this is a very new product) but we’re assured it will be soon by the company. Therefore, our testing was done with FeelConnect app and the Lumen.

Once you’ve downloaded the FeelConnect app, you can use it as a guest with limited functionality, but it’s best to set up a free user account. This takes less than a minute. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll need to click on the + button in the top right and click ‘device’ to connect your toy.

Switch your toy into Bluetooth mode (see above) and ensure Bluetooth on your phone is switched on, then wait while it connects. This took about three seconds.

From there, you have several options. You can connect your toy to interactive content by clicking the + button followed by ‘website.’ A QR code scanner appears, which you can use to connect with any interactive content on porn and cam sites. Sites like FeelMe, Pornhub Interactive, and SexLikeReal are just some of the sites you can sync to and vibe along with your favourite videos.

You can also click the “Touch Control” button and control the vibrations of your plug manually by sliding a finger up and down, or connect to another local device if you have one (for example, your partner’s toy if you’re physically together.)

Perhaps most excitingly, especially in these pandemic times, is the ability to connect with a partner from anywhere in the world. You’ll need to add your partner by using the + button and then typing in their username. Once they’ve accepted your request you can chat, video call, and hand over control of your toy.

The partner controls aren’t as extensive as they are in some toy apps, but they are, as my partner put it, “definitely good enough for recreational use.” When you give your partner control of your toy, they use a slider from within the app’s chat section to turn your toy on, off, up, or down with the swipe of a finger. The Lumen is responsive, quickly and reliably following the instructions my partner was inputting on their end.

The only downside is that the Bluetooth connectivity was a bit finicky. It worked fine for the first 30 minutes or so, but then it dropped off and refused to reconnect until I restarted the app and switched my Bluetooth off and back on. It has done this several times since, even when I’ve been using it alone. I know that my Bluetooth isn’t the problem, because I tried other connected devices to test it and they were working fine.

It’s not an altogether unheard of issue for internet-connected sex toys, but it’s still a bit annoying, and avoidable — not all toys have this issue.

OhMiBod and Kiiroo Lumen: Overall

If you’re just looking for a straightforward vibrating butt plug, I might hesitate to recommend the Lumen, but only really because it’s more expensive and capable than your needs.

However, if you’re looking for something with a heap of cool additional features and long-distance compatibility, this is the one to go for as long, provided at least one of the two apps can iron out those pesky connectivity issues soon.
