VR porn aggregator site SexLikeReal has suggested that it is working on deepfake VR porn, starting with face-swapping.
This article was updated to more accurately reflect the potential use of the technology, and to include a response from SexLikeReal.
A SexLikeReal representative wrote on Reddit that the company is working on technology that could swap the faces of porn performers in VR videos. The post was then deleted, as deepfake discussions involving real people aren’t allowed on the site.
The comment about the supposed forthcoming VR porn project was made in a reply to a Reddit user asking about apps allowing you to swap a VR porn actress’ face with the face of their ex-girlfriend. The SexLikeReal representative said that the company had something “in the pipeline” and were “looking for the right people to get it running”.
In a wrap-up post looking ahead to 2023, SLR said that it was aiming to have the deepfake features live before the end of the year.
“AI-generated deepfake videos using the Originals library. Choose anyone from the Originals library to appear in a scene created using deepfake technology. Delivery is expected by the end of 2023,” the company wrote.
While there are deepfake porn sites operating at the moment, they tend to focus on celebrity face-swapping, and most VR porn deepfake videos aren’t generally considered to be particularly convincing, or high quality.
Sharing deepfake images and video without the consent of those featured in it is set to become illegal in the UK and other countries are generally considering similar laws.
In the same post, SexLikeReal said it was working on adding voice synthesis to adult content using AI, so that performers would appear to be speaking scripted short phrases written by users. There’s no definitive ETA for that feature either though.
Feedback from some users in the now-removed post weren’t overly impressed with the plans.
“[I’]m trying to abstain from calling you all sorts of names. this is wildly unethical, not to mention pathetic. this is everything that’s wrong with ai,” one user wrote.
However, SexLikeReal has clarified to SEXTECHGUIDE how it intends to approach the use of the technology ethically.
“Our explorations in this field are based on model masks and dialog substitution where we have permission to do so. To be clear, we will never use anyone’s likeness in ways they have not willingly agreed to. Ever,” a spokesperson said.
Update: a spokesperson for the company got in touch to say:
“SexLikeReal is primarily a technology-driven company and we work with leading experts in the fields of computer vision and machine learning. We are constantly pushing the boundaries of technology to create a world-beating playground where consenting adults can safely explore their sexuality.”
“We are also very aware of our responsibilities. Not only in terms of regulation and the law, but also to do what is ethically correct,” they added.
