Roblox has announced that it will introduce age estimation for anyone who uses the games platform’s communications features by the end of 2025.
The move follows the enormously-popular platform coming under fire for allegedly allowing sexual exploitation to take place on it. Roblox, which is being sued in the US by the state of Louisiana over the claims, has said that “any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue.”
On Wednesday (September 3, 2025) Roblox announced that a combination of face age estimation technology, ID verification and parental consent would be used for the age estimation rollout for communications functions such as text chat.
The platform added that it would limit communication between adults and minors within Roblox, unless the users are confirmed as knowing each other in the real world. Roblox said it hoped the move would set a standard “that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms follow”.
Guess your age
Roblox recently introduced age estimation technology to verify users aged 13 and above, to allow them to chat with ‘trusted connections’ on the platform, and to keep under-13s out of Roblox’s social spaces.
The platform is hugely popular among children, with critics saying that adults seeking to exploit them within Roblox has become a rampant problem.
“We’re taking this step [age estimation] as part of our long-term vision as a platform for all ages. We expect that our approach to communication safety will become best practice for other online platforms, whether lawmakers pass laws requiring age verification for all platforms in the future or not,” Roblox said in a statement.
The forthcoming age estimation rollout was announced shortly after Roblox said it would force developers to apply for maturity labels for their Roblox content, before the content is made widely available.
Previously, unrated ‘experiences’ in Roblox, which can include games and social spaces, were accessible for users verified as being aged 13 or above. This is changing, with experiences only made publicly accessible after developers fill out a questionnaire to get a content maturity label.
Some content on Roblox is restricted to those verified as aged 17 and above. This age verification tier was pushed in 2023, when the company began to allow more ‘romantic’ content on the platform plus content such as ‘crude humor’.
Implied sexual activity
Roblox said it would also soon prohibit content that implies sexual activity, rather than just prohibiting content that depicts it.
Furthermore, Roblox social hangout experiences that depict “private spaces” such as bedrooms and bathrooms will become restricted to those verified as aged 17 or older.
The company added that it would roll out new technology to detect scenes in Roblox that potentially violate these policies, and automatically take down servers that show a high volume of “violative user behavior”. Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, said the updates were being made “to help promote safety and civility on Roblox”.
Announcing them on August 15, 2025, he added: “We’re releasing the news about this policy change earlier than we had planned because we know constant progress in this area is as important to our community as it is to us.”
In the US state of Louisiana’s lawsuit against Roblox, the state accuses the platform of perpetuating an online environment in which predators “thrive, unite, hunt and victimize kids”.
In response to the lawsuit Roblox said: “No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection, including efforts to take users to other platforms, where safety standards and moderation practices may differ. We continuously work to block those efforts and to enhance our moderation approaches to promote a safe and enjoyable environment for all users.”
Recently Roblox CEO David Baszucki said that he would like to one day introduce a dating function within the platform, for verified users aged 21 and over.
