VR porn videos that give you the sensation of properly moving around in, rather than just experiencing with head movements from a static position, are set to be rolled out on the SexLikeReal (SLR) site.
SLR is working with the VR porn game company BraindanceVR to make VR porn videos with six degrees of freedom (6DoF), meaning that you can make movements such as walking and leaning in, as the sex scene unfolds.
“Rather than just look around, this content will allow full movement – leaning, stepping closer, and interacting, just like in real life,” SLR said.
For 6DoF VR experiences, both the rotational and translational motion of the headset wearer is tracked, rather than just head movements, as is standard for most VR. Some other VR porn producers have released 6DoF content, but it’s relatively early days for this niche within the VR porn industry.
To achieve 6DoF, SLR and Braindance capture porn performers and their environments in full 3D, using multiple cameras and angles for a process called volumetric video. These scenes are then reconstructed as full 3D models, which can be explored in VR from multiple angles and viewpoints.
This process uses huge amounts of data, but SLR said that it was becoming more feasible to produce, as compression and rendering technology continues to improve. “Companies experimenting with volumetric capture aim to bring hyper-realistic adult experiences where users can explore a scene naturally, rather than being locked in place,” SLR says.
Depth maps are also used for this 6DoF VR porn process. For depth-mapping, different shades are assigned to objects based on their distance to the camera taking captures, then this shading data is used by software to gauge depth in traditional VR videos, to allow them to feel more 3D.
SLR and Braindance created a [very NSFW] demo 6DoF VR porn video to show off the technology.
Alex Novak, founder of SLR, says that “while it may take longer for 6DoF porn to become mainstream, these innovations are setting the stage for the most immersive and interactive adult experiences yet. Soon, immersive porn won’t just be something you watch – it’ll be something you step into.”
He added that 6DoF will become integrated across the SLR site soon, without specifying a date.
Recently SLR announced that it was rolling out a VR passthrough function for VR porn camming, that can be used for videos beyond those filmed with green (or chroma) screen backgrounds.
