It just got a tad easier to generate erotic chat on ChatGPT, with OpenAI releasing new guidelines about creating such content in “appropriate contexts”.

In the past ChatGPT has had relatively rigid guidelines stopping the AI chatbot generating sexual or often even romantic content, such as stories involving kissing. However, the new version of OpenAI’s Model Spec document, featuring its updated guidelines, outlines how the programming rules have been relaxed.

According to the new Model Spec, erotica-related text may be able to be generated by ChatGPT if it is in an educational, medical or historical context, or if it is a transformation of content provided to ChatGPT by the user. Under the new guidelines, such content is classed as ‘sensitive content’, alongside gore.

New tests of ChatGPT’s romance literature skills did suggest, though, that there had been a slightly wider loosening of the erotica generative text rules. It’s now possible, for example, for ChatGPT to generate a story featuring a “slow, lingering kiss, one that deepened with every passing second”.

OpenAI’s DALL-E image generators are still not able to create erotic images, but can create scenes featuring kissing. The chatbot said: “I can create sensual and romantic images, focusing on intimacy, passion, and artistic expression. However, I cannot generate explicitly erotic or sexually explicit images, as OpenAI still prohibits that type of content.”

In 2024 OpenAI said it was “exploring” the possibility of allowing ChatGPT to generate some NSFW content, but has clarified that it has no plans to allow its generative AI products to create porn. The new Model Spec parameters hardly usher in a new age of NSFW AI, but do mark another nudge towards some form of adult content being able to legitimately feature on the AI generator.

In the new Model Spec guidelines, the company wrote that recently “many users and developers expressed support for enabling a ‘grown-up mode’” for ChatGPT.”

The company added that it was “exploring how to let developers and users generate erotica and gore in age-appropriate contexts through the API [application programming interface] and ChatGPT so long as our usage policies are met – while drawing a hard line against potentially harmful uses like sexual deepfakes and revenge porn.”

Sam Altman

Recently Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, wrote on social media: “Definitely need some sort of ‘grown up mode’.”

There are many AI chatbots available that are not as squeamish about sex acts as ChatGPT. They often come in the form of ‘AI girlfriend’ services such as Candy.ai and Cutechat AI, but there are a bunch of erotica-focused services too.

If you’ve experienced image-based sexual abuse or non-consensual sharing of intimate images, help is available worldwide.
